3 Ways To Get Your Staff To Care About Their Jobs| Business Tips for Insurance Agents

When I was younger I had a summer job doing physical labor for a construction company. We usually worked in crews, but the schedule had fallen through and I had a week from hell that I spent working mostly alone. And, as per usual, most of the things that could go wrong on these jobs, did go wrong — and I was left to tackle it alone. No one was around to commiserate, brainstorm or encourage.

On Thursday night of that week I came back into the shop at the end of the day, after everybody else had already finished their jobs and left for the night. Except the boss was there, still, doing some bids and paperwork.

I went into his office: “I’ve had a really hard week,” I said. Tears welled in my eyes as I shared my frustrations with the jobs, with myself, with having to tackle it all alone.

And he laughed. He promptly apologized, and said, “I’m sorry! I don’t mean to laugh, it’s just — I’ve been there. I know how that feels. You don’t know how many tears I’ve shed on this carpet at the end of days and weeks like this has been for you. But I’m glad to see you like this because it shows me something — you care. If you didn’t, it wouldn’t bother you as much, and you’d be on with your night already. I can’t ask for a better attribute in an employee than care.”

That’s stayed with me. The thing is, while I liked the job itself, it’s the way he ran the company that instilled care in me and my coworkers.

So, how do you get your employees at your insurance agency to be more productive/ more invested/ more engaged in their work? You have to make them care.

Here are 3 ways to help your employees care about your Insurance Agency:

  1. Keep people informed– People around, your staff, your customers and intending customers need to know what’s going on with your business. In a study on workplace motivation, thousands of employees named ‘being in the know’ as one of the most important factors leading to job satisfaction and staff retention. When necessary, send newsletters that’ll update people on promos, news and announcements that pertain to your business. Seek new ways to add value to your customers using information.   2. Let them learn their own way — It’s great to have clear, measurable goals for your staff members, but micromanaging how they accomplish these goals can snuff the fire of care right out of even the most talented, responsible team members. Let them flounder a little bit if necessary so that they can find their own way to the end goal. This will give them ownership, and along with that, pride of ownership over those tasks and projects.
  3. Show appreciation — Some companies do this by having company perks like monthly car washes for the employees or throwing a party or giving incentives for meeting goals. Some employers are good at verbal affirmation, thanking employees for their hard work and acknowledging how big of strides their efforts have made for the company. Some employers are good at recognizing when their employees are working above and beyond their pay, and giving raises before employees ask for them (which also usually grows ownership and diminishes any resentments for being ‘overworked’). However it works for you and your staff at your insurance agency, continually find ways to show your team members how much you appreciate them and how much the success of your agency depends on them.
