That thing you dont want to do? Do it this way.| Business tips

Many independent insurance agents like yourself are doing what they do because they love the freedom of being their own boss, they have that entrepreneurial spirit, and it’s led them here: to running a viable insurance business. Sound familiar?

But if you’ve got that entrepreneurial streak, you are probably also familiar with a problem that often strikes anyone with either a creative or a working-out-of-the-box gift: Motivation to do the things you just don’t want to do right now.

You’ve been there. You’ve put off something all day, or all week, not necessarily because it’s hard, but just because you don’t want to do it. And now it’s the last hour again and you feel stressed and yet you still just don’t want to do that one thing. Ultimately, if you get it done (which, hopefully, you do), it’s not going to be your best work, and you’ve probably puttered around that task all week wasting energy and time trying to not do it.

One of the downfalls of that entrepreneur life is that you have to be the person that requires and motivates yourself to get stuff done. Admittedly, it’s hard sometimes, and even more difficult when you’re juggling a full (or more than full)-time job, personal projects on the side, and some piece of a family and social life. And when you could and should be the most productive, you have the least amount of motivation and discipline to do so.

A piece recently posted on the Nectar Collective gives us a couple tips for getting stuff done when we have the time, but not the motivation:

Use the 20-second rule. Want to get stuff done? Make it 20 seconds easier to do. In The Happiness Advantage, author Shawn Achor describes a simple strategy for… doing things even when we don’t feel motivated. Achor says, “Lower the activation energy for habits you want to adopt, and raise it for habits you want to avoid. The more we can lower or even eliminate the activation energy for our desired actions, the more we enhance our ability to jump-start positive change.”

Recognize when you’re at the top of your game. Figure out when you feel and work your best and then do all of the things that take the most brain power during those times.

Create rewards. Tell yourself that once you finish X, you can have/do Y. Another alternative is to reward yourself with something (like a small piece of candy) whenever you knock an item off your to-do list.

Organize. Spend 15 minutes organizing your work area and cleaning up… When your work space is clear, your mind is clear.

Try using these tips next time you’re running up against that task that feels like a brick wall: Focus on the small ways you can make it easier to start the project. As we all can admit if we’re honest, the hardest part is simply starting.
