4 Key to Better Customer Service | Business Tips for Insurance Agents

Chances are good that in your city, there is more than one Insurance Agency that has the markets that your customers need. But the reality is, especially when it comes to smaller insurance agencies, the difference that will cause your customers to choose you over your competitors is going to be largely based on their personal interactions with you and their feelings about your customer service.

Many of your clients would surprisingly even be willing to pay more for the same product (or similar products) if they feel that they can trust you to take care of their needs in a timely, efficient manner and be friendly while you do so.

Whether you’ve worked in the service industry waiting on tables or manning retail counters, or whether you have no experience in that genre, it is essential that you become an expert at providing good customer service if you want to win business, and to retain it.

4 Tips for Better Customer Service for Independent Insurance Agents:

  1. Be Transparent. You want your clients to feel like they can trust you, and part of this comes from showing a willingness for transparency both before and after the sales process. Encourage your potential clients to look at your background, through a check or by searching sites like The Better Business Bureau and the National Ethics Association. Tell them there is nothing in your past that you’re keeping from them.
    By encouraging them to look and empowering them to do so, you’re showing that you have nothing to hide.
  2. Make Time for One-on-One Interviews.  People will want to meet you in person. After all, they will want to have confidence in you before entrusting you with their insurance needs. The business relationship between you and your clients can last for years, so make it easy for them to schedule a time to sit down with you and ask any questions they have. If you make them feel valued and respect their time, they will be far more likely to choose you. Offer to explain any and all of your services and methods so they are fully knowledgeable about you as an agent.
  3. Put Yourself in Their Shoes. When you speak with prospective clients, remember that they are people with families, lives, and jobs. Get to know them by starting the conversation on a light note. Ask about these things and you will make them feel more at ease before you start to talk business. Making your potential clients feel comfortable is important, and ultimately they will feel better working with you if they feel valued by you.
  4. Treat Business Referrals as Special Guests. When I started to look for a house, a friend of mine with several rental properties referred me to his Realtor. Though I was looking for an inexpensive house, the Realtor treated me as a VIP customer because I’d been referred by one of his best customers. He went out of his way to do his job well for me. When I was done with purchasing my house, I couldn’t say enough good things about him and his services. I’ve recommended several friends who have since used him, and I’ve given him several good online reviews. He came highly recommended, lived up to it, and now I’m highly recommending him. In the reverse though, if he had done a poor job with me and meeting my needs, it may have even given my friend pause about whether to continue to use him or not when he bought his next house.  Bottom line, if someone recommends you as an Insurance Agent — make sure you put in extra effort to live up to that recommendation.
