The Gratitude Effect – How cultivating gratitude can help your insurance business

Published on May 4, 2017

You’ve got one hundred things on your to do list and your day is filled with things that stress you and tire you.

So what good is gratitude?

There have been several studies on the subject, and it’s become clear that anyone can cultivate gratitude in their own lives by simply practicing it. Exercises such as gratitude journals, where every day for 3 weeks you write down something for which you are grateful, are especially helpful in cultivating gratitude.

Robert Emmons, the world’s leading scientific expert on gratitude, writes for the “Greater Good – The Science of a Meaningful Life” blog about the benefits that their studies have shown gratitude to bring.

“We’ve studied more than one thousand people, from ages eight to 80, and found that people who practice gratitude consistently report a host of benefits:

• Stronger immune systems
• Less bothered by aches and pains
• Lower blood pressure
• Exercise more and take better care of their health
• Sleep longer and feel more refreshed upon waking

• Higher levels of positive emotions
• More alert, alive, and awake
• More joy and pleasure
• More optimism and happiness

• More helpful, generous, and compassionate
• More forgiving
• More outgoing
• Feel less lonely and isolated.”

But above and beyond your personal benefits, what if practicing gratitude could effect your business?  It makes sense, since businesses are made of people, and gratitude effects people.

business tips for insurance agents

Donald Miller writes on the Storyline blog about a time in his mid 20s when he was running a small publishing company.  He got the idea to order a box of thank you cards for each person in his office.  He gave each employee a box and asked that they write one thank you card to someone everyday until their box was empty.

They wrote to customers, producers, fellow employees, prospective clients. And you know what happened?  Their business did better.

Are your customers, employees, producers, and others aware of how grateful you are for them? Tell them.  Do you not feel grateful toward any of them?  If not, they can probably tell. What if you started practicing gratitude for the people that you already ARE grateful for, and then as it cultivates, and as you start being grateful for more, let it flood into how you do business.

Gratefulness shouldn’t just be something you think about at the Thanksgiving table in November. And it doesn’t have to just be for your friends and family.  Watch how gratefulness effects your business, both internally and externally. You might be amazed.
