Moving In: Renters’ Insurance 101

Published on October 14, 2013

Renters’ insurance is a policy that provides most of the benefits included in a homeowners’ insurance policy. Unlike homeowners’ insurance, though, a renters’ policy does not cover the building with the exception to structural additions made by the tenant. Renters’ can rest assured that their personal property is protected from a number of threats including:

  • Fire
  • Flood damage
  • Mold
  • Theft
  • Vandalism

Many properties, large and small, require tenants to carry rental insurance and even dedicate a section of the lease agreement to outlining the specified coverage requirements. This allows the landlord to inform the tenant that they are not responsible for the tenant’s belongings. But it is important to know your options. There are three basic types of coverage available: Loss of Use, Personal Property, and Personal Liability. The P & C insurance experts at Abram Insurance can help you determine the coverage limits and responsibilities for tenants with any budget.
