Having a vision in Business: What are you working toward?

What are you working toward?

In Haiti, as in many developing countries and cultures, it is common to take one day at a time. There is not a culture of dreaming, of planning and working toward betterment of living conditions, because the tyranny of the urgent runs the place. Questions like “Will there be enough clean water for another day?” and “Will our crops fail because of the drought?” and “How do we afford to keep our children?” demand attention from many of the country’s citizens on a daily basis. Currently, Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere with 80% of the population living under the poverty line and 54% in abject poverty.

You can see how the situation in Haiti almost demands this type of day-to-day moment-to-moment mentality.

But a few years ago  I met a group of people that live in rural Haiti, and they were different  than many of their fellow countrymen — they were dreamers and doers. They had vision for what they wanted to happen in their village. And they were making it happen.

Five years prior they had decided they wanted to build a church building and a school building in the village. They started the building process, and were slowly building as they had the funds to do so. But they were consistently saving for the progress of it. The saved funds had come from a local micro-lending group they had organized (where you pool money together and then loan it out to individuals who have entrepreneurial ideas and then give the loan back plus a fixed interest amount). These folks were slowly working away at their dreams, and planning ways to make it happen.

In a country that is racked by poverty, there are still people who dream and create goals, and these people are finding a way. In our society, though the poverty numbers may differ, the paycheck-to-paycheck mentality and way of life doesn’t look all that different. And our approach toward goals may tell us why that is…

Three years ago, a church from California learned of the efforts of that group of people in Haiti, and created a partnership with them to help them with their goals of completing the church and school buildings. The community now has a structurally sound Church, School, and another cistern for clean water. The partnership continues and the Haiti community members are still envisioning new dreams and goals for their community.

Because when you start dreaming and you have defined goals that you are working toward, people want to get involved and to help make them happen. Vision is contagious.

So what are you working toward?

Have a vision. Define it. We’ve been getting away from that type of thinking in the business world. It’s pretty old school to have a mission statement hung on your wall.  But even if you don’t have one on your walls or your website, you should have one in your mind and heart.

I had a journalism professor in college who always asked about a story idea, “So what?”

That’s what we’ve got to be asking ourselves about our businesses:  “So what?”

What’s the point?

What are you working toward?
